Some foods can contribute to more stress, while others can bring down stress. When you are under stress you body produces more of cortisol, which is a stress hormone. This hormone makes you want to take in more of sweet foods or salty foods, excess of which is not good for your physical and mental health.

Here are a couple of tips on what are the right food habits you need for stress relief:

  • Balanced diet consisting of a good amount of carbohydrates, protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, gives you plenty of energy and good health. If you eat the right foods, your nerves are strong and your mind is less prone to succumbing to stressful situations.
  • You can set the right foods for your daily intake, by considering their calorie value and finding out what you ideal calorie intake should be on a daily basis. This helps to maintain weight and give your body the right nourishment. Once gain nourishing food gives you a balanced mind in tough situations.
  • Often what most people do when stressed out is have foods rich in sugar. Sugar is a serious ‘no no’ for stress. It can make you more depressed and eventually lead to diabetes.

  • Many-a-times, you must have been overworked at the office and thought… well maybe I’ll just take that cuppa. A cup of Tea or Coffee is the immediate reflex action to daily work stress. However, caffeine and tea is well-known for increasing heart-beat and for creating insomnia. So hold on those cups and instead have fresh juice or a fruit like apple or orange.
  • Fried items like chips, burgers should be avoided no matter how tempting. They just build fat in your body and easily make you stressed you. Your body takes time to digest such foods and you feel sleepy instead of feeling alert.
  • Don’t skip breakfast. This is one thing people in a hurry are often seen to do. The hunger pangs become acute by lunch time and the result is overeating during lunch. Hunger increases anxiety and stress as the body in unable to fight it off. Instead having good breakfast a light nutritious lunch, is what’s needed for an active mind throughout the day.
  • Avoid binging. This is a must because when you gobble up any food you can reach out to, you tend to increase toxic substances in your body and this increases stress.
  • Switch to low fat alternatives in all your chosen food products and brands.
  • Avoid Junk food. This is where most people get hit hard, by obesity, more stress and chronic health problems. If you want an active mind, you cannot live on junk food as this is full of junkies that load your body with toxins and what not. So, the next time you see junk food, see red and avoid it like the plague.
