Spicing Up Your Meals with Turmeric

Are you looking for new ways to add turmeric to your diet? Turmeric is a powerful spice with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in Indian curries for decades. You can now integrate it to your meals as well. Here are some easy ways to do it.

The active compound found in turmeric known as curcumin gives it that golden yellow color. It’s also responsible for the health-promoting and disease-fighting properties. Not only will it add flavor to your meal, it will also give you added benefits for your body.

  1. Turmeric for breakfast

Add turmeric powder to scrambled eggs to give it some color, extra flavor and also for its immense benefits. You can add it to the eggs before you put it on the pan to fry. Turmeric will add flavor to the usual scrambled eggs, giving it a twist. You will get not only new flavors but also the benefits of turmeric as well.

  1. Turmeric in smoothies

Use fresh turmeric root in your smoothie to add color and make it more nutritious. This is particularly tasty when preparing mango smoothies. Just add a teaspoon of turmeric powder and it helps to intensify the yellow color of the smoothie. You may find this weird at first but you’ll certainly be surprised with the flavor, this is a must try!

  1. Prepare golden rice

The next time you prepare boiled or steamed rice, think of adding some turmeric juice or powder to give it some color and unique flavor. You’ll notice turmeric maintains a strong flavor that slightly overpowers the flavor of rice. Now you won’t have the same, old, boring white rice.

  1. Use turmeric in soups

One common way to add turmeric in your diet is to use it in soups. This works really well for vegetable soups but you can also add the spice when preparing chicken soup. Turmeric has a strong flavor that works incredibly well with other ingredients like garlic and black pepper.

  1. Prepare turmeric tea

Another common way to use turmeric is to prepare it with some tea. Add some milk and honey then make a warm beverage to start your day. The other alternative would be to do away with the milk and prepare turmeric-ginger tea that is sweetened with honey.

  1. Make tasty chicken marinades

Turmeric can be a nice addition for your marinades. Mix natural yoghurt, a cup of olive oil, turmeric, ginger, cumin, salt, garlic and pepper in a bowl and add the chicken then marinade and massage it into the mixture until it is properly coated. Leave it to marinate for about 2 hours.

Extra tip

When incorporating turmeric in your diet, try and use it together with black pepper. Adding black pepper to the mix helps to enhance the absorption of curcumin, which is the most important compound in turmeric. For instance, use ½ teaspoon of black pepper to every ¼ cup of turmeric. You can use smaller portions but in those proportions. Try to experiment with turmeric and you will surely be surprised with the flavors that you will taste and experience.
